PURPOSE:
This database is an outgrowth of John Faustini’s Ph.D. dissertation research at Oregon State University. It is essentially a refined version of the GS002 data set (with the omission of the Cold Creek site) that was developed to reduce the “noisiness” of the cross-section profile data so that relatively small changes in channel cross-section geometry could be detected. It was kept as a separate database (rather than simply revising the GS002 database) to maintain the integrity of the original data and because of uncertainty about the availability of resources to continue the enhanced database in the future by incorporating new cross-section survey data. The refined data in this database facilitate the creation of time series plots of cross-section profiles for visual evaluation and quantitative analysis of cross-section changes over time. One new set of horizontal distance coordinates gives corrected perpendicular distance for non-orthogonal cross-sections (useful for hydraulic calculations) and a second scales each profile by the active channel width, useful for comparing the relative magnitude of cross-section changes between sites on different size streams (e.g., Lookout Creek vs. Mack Creek).
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

The cross section starting point (zero horizontal coordinate) is always located on the right bank of the stream, so cross-section plots created from the data will be upstream views unless the horizontal axis is reversed.

Spatial resolution of the cross-section survey data is variable, particularly for dates prior to 1986. In 1986, surveying protocols were standardized, and the horizontal spacing of elevation data points was set at 0.5 m, plus additional points as needed to capture abrupt changes in slope. Data for 1997 and 1998 were not part of the GS002 database at the time this database was created, and were entered and quality-checked by John Faustini.
