PURPOSE:
To determine the amount and spatial distribution of coarse woody debris on the mainstem of Lookout Creek to assess patterns of wood in relation to river morphology (e.g., channel form, degree of valley-floor constraint).
METHODS:

Description:
Field mapping of coarse woody degris with measurements of length, diameter, decay class, location, orientation, and pool formation. Calculation of channel width and sinuousity from GIS map.
Field Methods - GS016 :
Description:
From July to Sept of 1991, mapping was carried out by using the valley floor map created in a GIS. Other characteristics of the woody debris were measured in the field by tape and observation, except orientation which was indirectly measured based on the GIS map. Average channel width and sinuousity were calculated from the GIS map as well.
SITE DESCRIPTION:
The study area is the valley floor of a mountain watershed. Gradient is steep (ca. 0.02), substrate is large boulders, large wood (pieces of old-growth trees with diameters up to nearly 2 m) is abundant, and channel reaches vary from wide and braided to highly constrained by bedrock, alluvial fans from tributaries and also large landslide deposits from adjacent hillslopes.
