Intensive plant collecting on the Andrews Forest began in 1958 and was originally carried out by Drs. Jerry Franklin, C. T. Dyrness and James Hickman, and was published in 1971. In 1978-1979, Franklin K. "Herm" Fitz was contracted to verify and collect specimens present in the original list. An additional 27 species were added. In addition, specimens were collected at 7 nearby Research Natural Areas (RNA). Voucher specimens have been obtained for the majority of species listed and in most cases, are on file at both the Oregon State University Herbarium and the U.S. Forest Service Herbarium in Fort Collins, Colorado. In addition, most collections are also represented in a small working herbarium maintained at the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest Headquarters in Blue River, Oregon.
Nomenclature follows the taxonomic manuals as follows: Most herbs and shrubs - VASCULAR PLANTS OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST, VOLS. 1-5, by C.L. Hitchcock, et al. (1955-1969); trees and a few of the shrubs - CHECKLIST OF UNITED STATES TREES (NATIVE AND NATURALIZED), by E.L. Little, Jr., (1979). Common names provided, except for trees and a few shrubs which follow Little (1979), primarily follow NORTHWEST PLANT NAMES AND SYMBOLS FOR ECOSYSTEM INVENTORY AND ANALYSIS, 4TH EDITION, BY G.A. Garrison, J.M. Skovlin, C.E. Poulton, and A.H. Winward, (1976).
